PRAO

So, that’s it! Doris’ very first PRAO week (practical working life orientation) is over and it's big. PRAO is a work experience program that is compulsory in Swedish schools and gives the student the opportunity to participate and find out what working life might look like and not least to get a chance to try different work areas. A minimum of ten days will be spent in a in a working place. This first PRAO period had two workplaces fighting for Doris’ attention. Partly she was at a preschool and partly she was at a hairdresser's. Hairdresser was at the top of the list because the relationship between Doris and the hairdresser herself is very cozy and cool. Doris i was up and running with greeting and taking care of customers, the washing machine and the broom. At preschool, she had the opportunity to follow and participate in teaching and activities. Now, according to Doris, small children are not very fun, but I think she learned that jobs can look different and that taking care of small children is work that must also be done and is important, and I think I know that her effort at the prao site was as good as anyone else's. It was three hours a day and she has grown as a person again. Maybe there won't be a hair salon or preschool for Doris in the future, but one thing is certain, and that is that in the company of other good people she thrives best, yes, as long as those good people are not too small, that is.
